Your Mazda Protege will not pass the smog check if the check engine light is illuminated. You must get a smog check repair center to pull the diagnostic trouble codes from your Mazda's computer and repair the problem/s causing the check engine light to turn on. Once the repairs are made, the smog check station will reset the check engine light (turn it off), and you can than proceed with the smog test.
Mind you... once the smog repair shop resets the check engine light they will ask you to drive your Mazda for one week (about 200 miles) in order to prepare your vehicle's emission computer for the smog check (this process is called Setting the Emission Monitors).
