Emissions Component

1986 Isuzu Trooper II, 4x4, with a replaced Catalytic Converter.

I was told I would not pass the smog check due to new law of 2009; that my replaced cat(magnaflow 39006) that was installed in 1998 would now have to have a receipt for the work back then or replace it with a new OBDII cat on CA's exempt list. I've have yet to find it and the shop was torn down. It's well aged at the welds, but, still passes te smog test under 50% max or even avg. allowable. Do I go ahead and test it? Would it keep me from turning my trooper over to the state by-back by CAR? If it passes?

Answer:

California has always required any emission component replacement to carry with it documentation indicating the unit is California legal. Even back in 1998 you would have had to provide the smog station conducting your vehicle's smog check with documents proving the CAT was legal for California use; unless the EO number was stamped on the unit. So not much has changed now; go ahead and have your Trooper inspected. If all is well, emissions are low, components are functioning, you should pass the test.
