And the answer to your question is... find a Gold Shield Smog Check Station. A gold shield smog center can conduct the initial "test only" smog inspection on your Dodge Durango, repair the problem, and retest it, all under one roof. A test only smog station can not diagnose smog check failures. Your Dodge will fail the smog check for having the check engine light on, automaticly; and the test only station will not be able to (is not allowed to) tell you what is causing the check engine light to turn on. So, you want to either get the smog test at a test only center, and take the failed smog check report to a smog check test & repair center to get it diagnosed and repaired, and then return back to the test only center for a final inspection... or find a gold shield smog center which can do everything in-house. If you choose to go to go the first route, make sure you find a Test Only smog center which offers a "free" re-test. Many test only center do.
What we recommend you do is, forget the test only center or even a smog inspection for now; you know your Dodge is going to fail because of the check engine light. So... go ahead and drive do a smog test & repair shop. Have them fix the problem, guarantee you'll pass the test, and then visit a test only smog center for a smog inspection. A smog check repair center will be able to smog test your Dodge (to make sure it will pass a smog inspection), but can not issue a smog certificate for a test only required vehicle.
