You have to get your Ford Explorer repaired and passing the smog check before the registration expires. If you can't do this in time, go ahead and visit a local DMV branch, pay the registration renewal fees and get your "half way papers" (Not valid registration, but an attempt to show responsibility plus not be charged late fees). You may then explain to the DMV agent your Explorer's repair situation and buy a 30 day Temporary Registration Tag (going for I believe $50.00 now). You can post this on your Ford's rear window, and drive it legally for 30 days, while you get the smog check problem fixed.
