I need to know how many years before I need a smog check for my 2004 BMW 325CI.

It has been about 3 years since I bought the car and I have not received a notice from the DMV about a smog check.

Answer:  

Your 2004 BMW 325 should have needed a smog check in 2010. New vehicles which have been purchased in California are smog check exempt for 6 years.
