General Smog Check

Is the CA smog test based on the year of the car model or the year of the engine?

I am going to be buying a 1967-1968 Kaiser Jeep Military pickup truck, but will be swapping the stock inline 6 cylender Jeep Tornado engine, transfer case, and transmission with a 2011 Ford "Scorpion" V8 Deisel engine, and whatever transmission and tranfer case is mated to it. I will also be replacing the trucks stock Dana 60 front and Dana 70 rear axles with the modern day Dana 60 front and Dana 70 rear to be able to handle the 800 ft pound of torque the Ford motor puts out. What I'm curious about is will the CA smog test be based on the '67- '68 pickup itself, or the 2011 engine? Or is the test based solely on how much emissions come out of the tail pipe? Thank you for taking the time to read and answer this question.

Answer:

Great question... The California smog check is based on the vehicle engine year, and vehicle weight. In this specific case the state smog referee's office (which by the way is where you'll have to take your engine modified vehicle for its initial smog check) will test your vehicle as its engine model year.
