Failed Smog Test

2002 Honda Civic with Aftermarket Exhaust Headers - Do I need an EO number?

I took my car in for an emissions test. It passed everything except the visual part of the smog check. I had changed the exhaust header in 2000 and have had several test only centers pass my Honda with no problem. The smog technician stated the header doesn't have a EO stamp or ARB sticker number.

I looked up my part and it is smog legal. What can I do to rectify this issue?

Answer:

Fact is... The exhaust header you've installed must have an EO number affixed to it. All California legal exhaust headers have a stamp on them with an Executive Order number indicated they are legal for sale and use in California. Older aftermarket components may not have a stamp but will be shipped with paperwork indicating the model, design, and EO number; which you would provide the smog technician before the smog check proceeds.

At this point you can return to the emission test center with your header's documentation and ask for a re-test. There may or may not be a fee involved for the retest.
