You can try to adjust your 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse's idle air control valve,
but it's a procedure that should really be attempted by a trained
professional, or a vehicle owner familiar with engine mechanics. Your
Mitsubishi's idle air control valve should be located on the underside of
the throttle body. You can try adjusting it but if there is no idle speed
difference after either turning in idle air screw in (clockwise) or out
(counter-clockwise), the problem may be more severe like requiring the
replacement of the idle air control solenoid... But I suppose trying to
adjust the idle air valve yourself (if your mechanically inclined) before
having a smog check repair station perform complete diagnosis, repair, and
retest procedure is something you can try at home.
