According to our Emission Control Application Guide the original 4.3 liter
engine on your 1993 GMC C series truck did have a Air Injection system
installed. The new engine your purchased from the salvage yard (5.7 liter
350) does not have an AIS system. Since your doing an engine switch you only
need to install the emissions components the new engine has been equipped
with by the manufacturer. So in this specific case you no longer need an AIS
system, however once the engine change is complete a California state smog
referee will need to inspect and smog check your GMC truck. A regular smog
station can not perform the initial smog inspection after an engine change.
Once the smog check referee office conducts the first smog inspection and
ensures the engine replacement was done properly and your truck does not
pollute, subsequent smog checks can be conducted at regular smog stations.
Call the referees office at (800) 622-7733 to schedule a smog check
inspection once the engine change is complete.
