The most important thing you've got to make sure of before you figure this out is going to be the trouble code number. Are you sure based on the check engine light flashes that trouble code number 4 is present? If so... Code 4 on the older Honda Civic indicate a problem with the engine crankshaft position sensor. Normally if this sensor is defective it will not allow your Honda to start. Rarely is the sensor defective, and it cause engine hesitation. It's not impossible, but it's usually the camshaft sensor which is intermittently failing which causes a low power issue. We recommend checking the trouble code number again. We've posted the list and trouble code retrieval process for 1990 through 1995 Honda Civics below.
You can retrieve your Honda Civic's trouble code(s) yourself by using inserting a jumper wire at the diagnostic connector located in the passenger side kick panel. Insert the jumper wire in the 2 PIN service connector between pins 1 and 2. You should also see a 3 PIN connecter. This is used for a trouble code scanner. Trouble codes will be stored in the ECU even if the check engine light is not on.
Once the jumper is inserted, turn on the ignition key. The trouble code(s) will begin flashing using the check engine light indicator. Begining counting the flashes. Use Trouble Code 23 as a guide. Example: 2 long flashes followed by 3 short flashes = Trouble Code 23. If more than one trouble code exists there will be a long pause in between the codes.
