1998 Lexus ES300 Never Received DMV Renewal Notice

I don't have my DMV registration renewal notice. It was never sent to me. I called the DMV and they said I need a STAR smog test. But since I don't have my paperwork in hand will this be a problem? Can I still get my Lexus smog checked without the renewal notice?
