Chevrolet Suburban Passing Smog After Engine Rebuild

I am rebuilding the original motor in my Chevy Suburban (5.3 L 327). The vehicle currently has 156K miles and rebuild is preventative. I just bought this without getting it smog checked as I knew that I was going to rebuild the motor.

I transferred the title to my name the same day and did the "registration in process" route with the DMV.

After I complete the rebuild, do you think it will pass the smog test? I am replacing the O2 sensors and all of the original equipment is the same. Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer:

Assuming the engine rebuild is done properly and all emission systems are present and functioning properly, your Chevy Suburban should pass the smog check without any special needs. An ordinary smog station will be able to perform a title transfer smog test on your vehicle. There will be no need for a referee inspection.

An "engine rebuild" falls under the same rule as an "engine replacement". An engine replacement is the replacement of a vehicle’s engine with the same engine size or an engine offered by the manufacturer for the same year, make and model of said vehicle. This is considered an "engine replacement" and does not require a Referee station smog inspection.
