I have a 1999 Toyota 4Runner that I bought from a private owner. The it has an expired registration dated Febuary and smog check expired in November. I haven't registered the car because the check engine light came on and I can't afford to get the car fixed to get it to pass the smog test. I decided to move to Hawaii. I am planning to ship it this month. Do I need to get a smog check to be able to get temporary registration? Is the temporary tag still cost $50.00?
Answer:
You will not need a smog check in order to obtain a Temporary California Vehicle Registration tag. The tag will be valid for 30 days. As the date of this post, the California DMV charges $50.00 for a temporary tag.
