Your smog certificate (or smog certification) is good for 90 days from the date of issuance. If you're selling your vehicle, and a biennial smog certificate was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior, you do not need to obtain another smog check. Your original smog test certificate will suffice. Smog certificate data is transferred from the smog station which inspected your vehicle to the DMV electronically. At times however, it may be required that you provide the DMV proof of certification. If for any reason the DMV system is down during the time of your smog test, or the elapsed time between your smog check and visit to the DMV is short, you may be required to show proof of smog check. The smog station which inspects your vehicle will hand over a Vehicle Inspection Report after the smog inspection. This report (when passing) is proof of smog certification. Keep it handy, for now and the future.
