Failed Smog Test

Failed MIL/CHECK ENGINE LIGHT 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Van OBD II conection problem

Our vehicle failed a smog test yesterday due to the following: This vehicle failed the MIL/Check Engine Light Test due to failure to successfully complete all OBD self tests.

The tech told us to drive the car around for about 100 miles and bring it back the next day. And, today, 08/07/10, is the next day. We drove the car for that distance and took it back. Today, another problem occurred. The smog testing equipment was unable to communicate with our vehicle. However, yesterday, it could. We didn't take the car to a mechanic or do anything to the car at all. What is the problem? What can we do? Our plates must be renewed no later than 09/02/10. The car is in good running condition. And that MIL/Check Engine Light is not on in the dashboard.

Answer:

Did the smog technician try to get your Dodge Ram to communicate a few times? What was the smog techs explanation for this problem? We're thinking maybe your Dodge has an intermittent OBD II connection problem. If the smog technician did try to get the smog machine to communicate with your van several times unsuccessfully we have to recommend you have a smog check repair station diagnose this problem. Your Dodge may either have a loose OBD II connecter or pin, or a faulty engine computer. There is no telling at this point without a hands on diagnosis.
