Hello, I own a 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 507c.i.d, 5.0L, 4BBL Carbureter, with a TH200-C (3-speed)Transmission. I want to know what the legal requirements are in California for an engine swap as far as the smog check is concerned.
My vehicle is registered as Non-Operational (Not Running). When I attempted to smog test it, it failed. I wanted to upgrade the engine prior to registration and I was wondering if there are any guidelines.
I want to upgrade my engine to a fuel injected one and hopefully '99 or newer. Along with the engine I hope I can be legally allowed to swap (original to new engine) the transmission (much more fuel efficient 5 or 6 speed), the exhaust (with O2 sensor, catalytic converter), the ECU/PCM, and the OBD2. I was wondering, if done correctly, if there are any restrictions aside from only passenger to passenger engines. I want to make this Oldsmobile Cutlass more fuel and emission efficient. Thank you for your time.
