2005 Hyundai Tucson Not Completing Emission Monitors

My 2005 Hyundai Tucson failed the smog test because the smog machine says there are no readings.

I took my Hyundai Tucson for the smog test and the smog technician said my computer does not have any info to relay. They said maybe the battery was disconnected or something. He said bring it back for a  retest after I put 150 miles on it and drive it on the freeway. I came back after 200 miles and it failed again. They said I still needed more miles. I went to a second test center for a second opinion and they said the same thing. Then I put another 300 miles on it and went back and they still said computer won't relay any info. I went to the Hyundai dealer and they said the same thing that I need to keep driving it at slow speeds and in traffic, etc. Now what am I supposed to do? I 've already paid for 2 tests and I'm failing not because my car is not up to par but because they can't get a reading! They mentioned something about the emission monitors not being complete.


Answer:  

Getting your Hyundai Tucson to complete a drive-cycle and set the required emission monitors in order to pass the smog inspection can at times be difficult. We recommend two options. Either purchase an inexpensive trouble code / readiness monitor scanner from a local auto parts store (approximately $60.00) and continue driving your Hyundai while checking to see if all monitors have completed or contact the state smog check referee's office to see whether they can by-pass the readiness monitors portion of the smog check.

Generic OBD II Drive Cycle Instructions for Hyundai

Start by ensuring your Hyundai's Intake Air Temperature (IAT) is between 14 and 122 degrees F. Your Hyundai's fuel tank should be between 25% and 75% full during all portions of the drive cycle. Do not attempt to complete a drive cycle with a full tank of fuel. The EVAP portion of the drive-cycle will not run.

Remeber to keep throttle 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 open during all acceleration periods, and during deceleration slow to less than 15 mph at an engine speed of less than 1000 rpm without touching the brake or clutch pedal. Also during cruising periods, maintain a steady engine speed between 1500 and 4000 rpm.

The drive cycle begins with a cold engine. Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) must be less than 127 degrees F. We recommend starting the drive cycle after your Hyundai has cooled overnight.

Start the engine and allow it to idle in Park for one to two minutes. Within the first minute and a half, accelerate at 1⁄4 to 3⁄4 throttle to 50-55 mph. Hold at 50-55 mph for 2-3 minutes.

Next, decelerate to 0 mph without braking, then idle for 1-2 minutes at a stand still. If you're on a freeway during the acceleration portion of the drive-cycle pull off the road during this segment in order to be able to make a safe stop.

Accelerate to 55 mph, using 1⁄4 to 3⁄4 throttle, then hold a steady cruise for 10 to 20 minutes.

Return to stop with the engine idling in Park then turn the ignition off.

If all other emissions systems are functioning properly, completing the drive cycle above should set your Hyundai's "readiness flag" emission monitors required to pass the smog check. It will not hurt to perform the drive cycle 2 or 3 times before the smog inspection. Take extra caution while performing drive cycles on public roadways. Drive cycles can be difficult to follow under normal driving conditions.
