Out of State Vehicle

Failed smog inspection on an out of state vehicle. 1995 Jeep Wrangler(YJ) SE 4.0.

I bought from a friend in florida originaly from deleware my 1995 jeep wrangler(YJ) SE it has a 4.0 with a 5speed. Im trying to get it reg and street legal for cali. My first question; is how do I know if my smog test was held to California standards or to Federal standards? I asked the guy at the shop and he didn't know anything pretty much. I failed my first test and was told it was either my cat or my O2 sensor so i replaced both and did my retest my numbers went done a lot but im still failing HC and CO. My NO is now perfect. I have put a lot of money into this Jeep to get it street legal and now my only problem is smog check. I can provide the smog test numbers if needed.

Answer:

1. Your VIR report will indicate whether your vehicle was tested as a California vehicle or Federal legal vehicle; thought both tests are identical. The report only indicates what the smog technician entered into the smog machine during the smog test. All USED vehicles, California emissions legal or Federal emissions legal, are allowed for import into California and can undergo a smog inspection and vehicle registration through the DMV.

As far as the emissions numbers... I can recommend you use our online VIR diagnosis system and have one of our smog technicians look over your failed vehicle inspection report for an evaluation. Though I must tell you since you've already replaced the O2 sensor and Catalytic Converter, the problem may be complicated. Regardless, it seems as though you will be required to have a hands-on diagnosis conducted in order to find the root fault. I would not recommend replacing any further smog components with out an expert smog check repair mechanics advice.
