Does this 2000 Toyota Celica have a smog check problem?

I am looking at purchasing the above car, however after reading the carfax report and seeing that it failed the emission test 3 times: at 69,902 miles in 2008, at 93,877 miles in 2011 and again at 102,125 in 2012. The inspection will be coming up again soon (April 2013). I am concerned; should I be or is this something can be dealt with rather simply? What are the causes? Thank you in advance for the help. p.s. I am 65 and planning on this being my last car purchase. I have not test driven the vehicle yet, only made an appointment to.

Answer:

The 2000 Toyota Celica is not a "known" smog test problem vehicle. It seems as though this particular Toyota Celica might have not been receiving the correct repairs required to pass the smog inspection, instead simply being applied a "quick fix" to get it to pass the smog inspection.

In terms of if and what repairs might be needed during future smog inspection, is an unknown. This Toyota Celica could have failed its smog inspection for dozens of different reasons.

If you are serious about this vehicle it would be best to invest in a certified pre-inspection from a local Toyota dealership or certified Toyota expert. You will also want them to run a smog check pre-test in order to learn whether or not it will pass a smog check.
