These are the guideline however for the type of smog check needed when a vehicle is being bought or sold.
1. If the vehicle has received a registration renewal notice during the period in which it is being sold and and the renewal notice is requiring a smog check, the vehicle will need a smog inspection at the type of smog station designated by the DMV and indicated on the registration renewal notice. In the case of this particular 1996 Audi we'd imagine it would need a Test Only inspection based on the vehicle's age.
2. If the vehicle is being bought during a non "smog check required" registration period, it will only require a regular smog check, which may be obtained at ANY smog check station.
