Failed Smog Test

1995 Honda Accord did not pass smog test after CAT replacement

I have a 1995 Honda Accord and it failed the smog test this year. I changed the Catalytic Converter and it still failed. What else do I repair to pass the smog check?

Answer:

It's probably not as simple as changing the Catalytic Converter in order to pass the smog check. Not sure who recommended replacing the CAT. Hopefully it was not recommended by a smog station. There are many auto repair shops which will (in thinking they are helping their customers; when in fact they are hurting the customer and the environment and avoiding a possibly difficult diagnosis) prematurely recommend replacing the Catalytic converter as a fix' all to passing the smog check. The CAT must be at all times the last emissions component to be replaced after all other faults have been repaired. This is California Law. The CAT does not reduce the amount of emissions your Honda Accord's engine produces. The CAT only lowers emissions after they exit the engine. Simply replacing the CAT might help you pass the smog check, but it does nothing to get your engine to run properly. We'd recommend a hands on diagnosis from a reputable and certified smog check repair station in order to find out why your Honda Accord did not pass the smog test.
