If your Ford Contour you purchased is in good shape, meaning it's been
properly maintained, does not have smoking problems, no hesitation, and
overall in good running order, you should have no problem passing the
California smog test. California does have a more stringent smog check
program then other states however your Ford being purchased and brought into
California should have no problem passing the smog test so long as there are
no emissions tampers and its emissions measurements fall within California's
maximum limits. As far as repairs... The average cost to get a failing
vehicle to pass the smog check in California is $350.00 dollars. There will
be no waiver for your Ford if it fails the smog test because it's being
registered in California for the first time. But again... Your Ford will not
fail the smog test just because it's from out of state.
