The check engine light, along with being on, has specific OBDII trouble code(s) stored with in the ECU (Engine Control Unit).
The Trouble Code(s) will direct the smog technician to the emission component responsible for causing the check engine light to illuminate.
In this specific case the stored trouble code(s) may indicate a misfire and not an actual defective emission component. We're assuming this based on what you have been apparently told regarding cylinder 6 being weak, possibly due to weak valve springs, worn valves and/or piston rings.
If this is in fact the case, you may very well need to repair the engine, maybe not necessary replace the motor, but repair what is causing cyl 6 to lose compression.
