I own a 2000 Ford Ranger with manual transmission. The "Check Engine" is on so it won't pass the smog check. The dealer couldn't fix the problem after I spent $481 with them. Now they are ordering a new GEM module for another $425.
The truck runs fine, except that the check engine light is on; and sometimes the speedometer is erratic. The local Ford dealer said said they "pulled diagnostic trouble codes"; plus checked sensors/wiring manually and couldn't find the problem.
They think it could be the G.E.M. module; and are ordering a new one ($317). So basically, I've paid them $825 so far (and will pay another $150 or so in labor to install the GEM); and it still might not work.
This seems like a lot just to smog the truck, but I don't really see any alternative (plus I already paid them). It's possible I'd qualify for the low income delay program--but it looks like I would have needed to apply for that first (after I failed the smog test; but so far they haven't done a smog test because they know it wouldn't pass.
Do I have any options if the GEM module doesn't work? Maybe then I could do the two-year delay program rather than pour more $ into it? Thanks!
