1977 DODGE 1-TON CLASS C RV CHASSIS. ENGINE SWAP FROM DODGE 440 TO CHEVY 454. IS AIR PUMP REQUIRED FOR 1977 RV's???

Hello,

I have an old 1978 Robinhood Class C motorhome built on a 1977 Dodge 1-ton van chassis. It originally had a Dodge 440 engine in it and I have replaced it with a Chevy 454 engine. My local BAR rep told me before I did the engine swap that I would have to have the smog equipment that came on a Chevy 454 engine in a motorhome for the same 1977 model year chassis. Can you tell me if the AIR smog pump setup was/was not required for the Chevy 454 engine used in the 1-ton motorhome applications??? THANK YOU.

Answer:

The first model year engine we found for a Chevy 454 engine was for 1979. This particular engine comes in two emissions system configurations based on whether the engine was originally designed for use in California or not. The California equipped version comes equipped with an EVAP system and an AIR pump system. The no California version has neither.

I suppose in you specific case you'll need to find out which version of the engine you've obtained and proceed from their. To our understanding all emissions components the engine you plan on installing in your Dodge Class C motorhome was originally equipped with must be installed along with the engine.
