Out of State Vehicle

I want to buy an out of state 2001 Ford F250 V10 that does not specify if it meets California emission standards.

Must heavy duty trucks have California emission equipment to pass a California smog test? Where can I verify that a heavy duty truck has California emission equipment?

Answer:

The Ford F250 you plan on buying must only have the emissions components it was manufactured with in order to pass California's smog test. You'll have no problem passing the test as long as no one removed any emissions components from the Ford truck. California law allows USED trucks to be brought to and register in California so long as no emissions tampers exist and the truck's emissions fall within California's set limits. Since it's a used truck it does not need to have California emissions equipment installed; only the 49-state legal emissions components it was built with. Now if this was a new Ford truck you wanted to buy and bring into California you would need to make sure California emissions equipment were installed. The underhood emissions label would indicate if the truck is California emissions equipped. But again this is only if the truck was new.
